Environment and sustainability
Stated plainly, with the compromises included, because a sustainability page with no compromises in it is fiction.
Applies to. The fit out, the running of the building and what we buy.
Fit out
Existing structure and existing materials are kept wherever they can be. Where new material is needed, we choose repairable and long lived over fashionable. Furniture is bought second hand or built to last rather than replaced on a cycle.
Running the space
Low energy lighting on sensors in circulation areas, heating zoned by room rather than by building, refillable rather than single use wherever hygiene permits, and recycling separated on site under States of Guernsey requirements.
The honest limits
Clinical hygiene sometimes requires single use items, and hygiene wins that argument every time. Island logistics mean much of what we buy arrives by boat. We are not carbon neutral and we will not claim to be. Where we cannot do better yet, we would rather say so than buy an offset and call it done.
If any of this needs explaining, ask.
